From required certificates to salary prospects: discover how to start as a forklift driver and immediately find the right job in your region.

A forklift driver in Flanders operates a motorized forklift to move, load and stack goods in warehouses, distribution centers, production environments and ports. You ensure a safe and efficient flow of goods. You usually need a valid forklift certificate and work in shifts, fixed day work or nights.
As a forklift driver, you are responsible for the horizontal and vertical transport of pallets, crates and other loads. You often work together with order pickers, warehouse workers and shipping staff. In Flanders, the demand for qualified forklift drivers is high, especially in regions with a lot of logistics activity such as the port of Antwerp, West Flanders around Roeselare and Kortrijk, and East Flanders around Ghent.
Depending on the sector, your tasks can vary: from simple loading and unloading to complex warehouse management using scanners and warehouse management systems. Some positions require specific experience with a reach truck, stacker or side-loader forklift.
The logistics sector runs on forklift drivers. Without them, the flow of goods comes to a standstill. In Flanders alone, there are thousands of vacancies, from Kortrijk to Genk. But what exactly does the job involve? And how do you make sure you land that suitable vacancy? Here you can read everything you need to know, tailored to the Flemish labour market.
The main tasks of a forklift driver are:
You usually work with a sit-down or stand-up forklift, electric or gas-powered. In some warehouses you also use a reach truck for high racks or a pallet stacker for smaller loads. Safety always comes first; you wear safety shoes, a helmet and a hi-vis vest.
In Belgium, a forklift certificate is mandatory. You obtain this certificate after a few days of training at a recognised training centre such as VDAB, Syntra or a specialised private provider. You learn the theory (stability, load charts) and take a practical test. The certificate is usually valid for life, although employers sometimes recommend a refresher course. Without a certificate, you are legally not allowed to operate a forklift. As a starter, you can often follow training through an IBO (individual vocational training) with an employer, where you learn directly on the job and receive a contract.
For some specialised forklifts such as a reach truck or a forklift with a side loader, employers require an additional certificate or internal training.
The salary of a forklift driver in Flanders depends on experience, sector, shifts and region. On average, you can expect:
With an average working week of 38 hours, you earn between €2,200 and €3,000 gross per month, excluding shift premiums. In the port of Antwerp or in the petrochemical industry, wages are higher, while smaller warehouses in rural areas sometimes pay a bit less. Temporary work through staffing agencies is often at the same wage, but with a more flexible schedule.
Not every forklift is the same. In job ads you often see terms used interchangeably:
Depending on your certificate and experience, you may qualify for certain positions. Many employers train you internally for reach trucks or specific machines.
